Workshop 1 England – Coordinated community response (CCR) to domestic abuse – a local and national perspective – Shan Kilby, ADVANCE Brent and Catherine Kane, DV Coordinator Islington

The CCR workshop gives delegates an overview of the core elements of a Coordinated Community Response to domestic violence. Using practical examples the workshop will consider both the strategic and operational dimensions of an effective CCR model within a crime and disorder reduction partnership (CDRP) framework. Workshop materials will include handouts, interactive worksheets and references to practical resources including Brent Talking Heads DVD.

PRESENTER BIOGRAPHY

Shan is currently SDVC Coordinator for London Borough Brent, based within ADVANCE, the domestic violence advocacy project. ADVANCE, which also has a project in Hammersmith and Fulham, has been supporting survivors of Domestic Violence for over 10 years. Shan has worked in this field for over six years, initially within the voluntary sector undertaking direct support work with survivors. Since relocating from South Wales she has worked with partners to increase safety of survivors using criminal justice systems and also to develop learning and development initiatives through a number of different projects. Shan recently enjoyed co-producing the ‘Brent Talking Heads’ DVD which highlights the journey a survivor makes through the Criminal Justice system, with narratives from partner agencies.

MON_2b_KaneCatherine KaneCath is currently Domestic Violence Strategy and Services Co-ordinator for the London Borough of Islington, based within the Community Partnership Safety Unit in which she works closely with a range of partner agencies to support the strategic coordination of policy and practice in the borough. Cath has been developing coordinated responses to violence against women for over ten years, having worked with community development projects in Edinburgh, Scotland before moving to strategic and coordinating roles in local government. Cath's innovative approach to this work has recently involved her commissioning a documentary of survivors' stories Short Stories, Long Lives prior to working on the Brent Talking Heads project.
