Workshop 1 Northern Ireland – Older But Not Safer – Rosemary Magill, Women's Aid ABCL&N and Daniel Blake, Action on Elder Abuse
Concern about elder abuse has heightened in recent years and this focus has set it apart from other forms of violence. It seems to be that instead of looking at the obvious, evident links and correspondence between the abuse of older women and that of younger women, we have focused on differing responses, recognition, policy and procedural development, subsequently the term elder abuse may dis-empower and deter older women who are the majority of older victims from seeking services and resolutions to their violence.
This workshop aims to explore the barriers that exist for older women as victims of domestic violence. It will focus on:
- The need for routine enquiry in older peoples services
- Training for all professionals and agencies
- The development of specialist services for older victims of domestic violence
- Policy and procedural development to meet the needs of older victims and perpetrators
- Social marketing campaign in respect of older victims.
