Workshop 3 England – Changing the lives of women offenders who are victims of abuse – Nasim Akhter, Together Women Project (TWP) Contract Manager & Lead on Women Offenders, Yorkshire & Humberside

An outline will be given about TWP which offers a new approach to working with women offenders to empower them to change their lives using a range of approaches and interventions in the context that evidence indicates that 48% of women offenders on the probation case are victims of domestic abuse.

This will be followed by a discussion about how participants may use the learning from TWP to support women offenders and their children from become repeat victims of domestic abuse as well as reducing their risk of re-offending.

PRESENTER BIOGRAPHY

Nasim Akhter

Nasim Akhter is the regional lead for women offenders in Yorkshire and Humberside. She managed the TWP contract in Yorkshire and Humberside. Nasim is leading on taking forward the recommendation in the regional review of services to women offenders commissioned by the Yorkshire and Humberside NOMS office. The report was published in March 2009.  Before moving to the regional office Nasim conducted a review of services to women offender for West Yorkshire Probation which led to them changing how they work with women offenders.
